20 Questions to Ask Before Buying Antique Jewellery

Buying antique jewellery should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Whether you are choosing an engagement ring, a special gift or a piece for your own collection, asking the right questions can help you understand a jewel’s history, authenticity, condition and long-term wearability.
At The Antique Jewellery Company, we believe the beauty of antique jewellery lies not only in how it looks, but in the craftsmanship, materials and stories behind it. While even the most experienced dealers may not know the full provenance of every piece – and, in many cases, that mystery is part of the appeal – they should be able to explain what they do know about its age, gemstones, hallmarks, materials and condition.
A good dealer will be happy to talk you through a jewel in detail, helping you understand what makes it special and whether it is right for the way you want to wear it. Here are 20 useful questions to ask before buying antique jewellery.

Appreciate the context
1. What do you know about the history or provenance of this piece?
Not every antique jewel comes with a documented history, but a dealer should be able to tell you what they can about its age, style, period and previous life. Sometimes the clues are found in the design, the materials, the hallmarks or the way it has been made.
2. Is there any symbolism or meaning attached to the design?
Many antique jewels carry hidden meaning. Snakes can symbolise eternal love, forget-me-nots remembrance, hearts devotion, and stars or crescents guidance and protection. Understanding these details can make a piece feel even more personal.
3. Is it an original antique piece, or a later replica inspired by an earlier style?
There is a difference between an antique jewel, a vintage piece, a later reproduction and a modern jewel made in an antique style. A trustworthy dealer should be clear about what they believe the piece to be. At The Antique Jewellery Company, every jewel we sell is an original, one-of-a-kind piece, chosen for its character, craftsmanship and authenticity.
4. What makes this piece particularly valuable, rare or special?
Value is not only about gemstone size. Age, craftsmanship, rarity, condition, design, provenance, materials and wearability all play a part. With antique jewellery, character and originality can be just as important as carat weight.

Get into the detail
5. How can I be confident that it is authentic?
Authenticity is assessed through a combination of experience and evidence: construction, setting style, hallmarks, materials, wear, gemstone cuts and design details. At AJC, we look closely at how a jewel has been made, not just how it appears at first glance.
6. Can you talk me through the hallmarks, or explain why there may not be any?
Hallmarks can tell you a great deal, including metal purity, assay office, date letter and maker. However, not all antique jewels are fully hallmarked. Some marks may have worn away, been removed during resizing, or never been present in the first place, particularly on older or continental pieces.
7. Which materials have been used?
It is worth asking about the metal, gemstones and any other materials used in the piece. Some antique jewels include enamel, foil-backed stones, paste, natural pearls, early adhesives or later additions. These details affect care, value and everyday wearability.
8. What can you tell me about the carat, clarity, colour and cut of the stone?
For diamonds and gemstones, the 4Cs can be helpful, but they should be understood in context. Antique stones were often cut by hand to suit the crystal and candlelight, rather than to modern grading ideals. Old mine cuts, old European cuts and rose cuts all have their own charm, light and character.
9. Do the gemstones come with any certification?
Some stones, particularly important diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, may come with a certificate from a recognised laboratory. Not every antique jewel will have one, and for smaller or more decorative pieces it may not be necessary, but your dealer should explain what documentation is included.
10. Have any of the gemstones been treated or enhanced?
Treatments can affect value and care. Heat treatment is common in some coloured gemstones, while emeralds are often oiled. What matters is transparency: your dealer should tell you what is known, what is assumed, and whether further testing would be advisable.
11. For diamonds, what do the “points” refer to?
Diamond weight is measured in carats. One carat is made up of 100 points, so a 0.25 carat diamond may also be described as 25 points. This is simply another way of expressing diamond weight.

Consider the practicalities
12. Is the piece robust enough for everyday wear, or is it better suited to occasional use?
Some antique jewels are wonderfully wearable; others need a little more care. Rings, especially engagement rings, need to be assessed for setting security, stone hardness, band condition and lifestyle suitability.
13. How should I care for it and clean it safely?
Antique jewellery should be cleaned with care. Ultrasonic cleaners are not suitable for every piece, particularly jewels with emeralds, opals, pearls, enamel, foil-backed stones or delicate settings. A good dealer will explain how to look after your piece safely at home.
14. Why is it priced as it is?
The price of antique jewellery reflects more than materials alone. Rarity, design, craftsmanship, gemstone quality, period, condition and desirability all contribute. A dealer should be able to explain why a piece sits at a particular price point.
15. Is it likely to hold its value?
No dealer can guarantee future value, but well-chosen antique jewellery often has enduring appeal because it is finite, beautifully made and increasingly difficult to replace. The best approach is to buy a piece you love, with quality and condition in mind.
16. For rings, what size is it?
Ring size is an important practical detail. Always ask for the current size and whether it is suitable for the finger you intend to wear it on.
17. Can it be resized, and do you handle that?
Many antique rings can be resized, but not all. Full eternity rings, heavily engraved bands, enamelled rings or pieces with stones around the entire shank may be more difficult. Your dealer should advise what is possible before any work is carried out.
18. Can adjustments be made, such as changing the colour of the gold?
Some alterations may be possible, but with antique jewellery it is important to proceed carefully. Significant changes can affect a piece’s character, integrity and value, and are not always advisable. At The Antique Jewellery Company, we will always be honest about what can be done safely – and when a jewel is best left exactly as it is.
19. Can I return or exchange it if it is not quite right?
Before buying, check the returns and exchange policy, especially if purchasing online. Antique jewellery is personal, and it is reassuring to know what your options are if the piece does not feel quite right when you try it on. At The Antique Jewellery Company, we offer 30-day returns and 60-day exchanges for added peace of mind.
20. What documentation will I need in order to insure it?
For insurance, you may need a receipt, valuation or gemstone certificate, depending on the value and nature of the piece. Ask your dealer what documentation is provided and whether a separate insurance valuation is recommended.

Buying antique jewellery is about more than ticking boxes. It is about understanding a jewel’s age, beauty, condition and character, then deciding whether it feels right for you. The best pieces are not always the most perfect on paper; they are the ones with charm, integrity and a story you want to continue.
