Victorian 18ct Gold & Carnelian Signet Ring with Intaglio of a Sailing Ship

629T
480 Admirers Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 18ct gold signet ring that was made circa 1860-1880. It has been set with a carnelian that has an intaglio of a ship in full sail. Carnelian is a type of banded agate that was often used to carve intaglios as when cut through the lighter layer it created a contrast with the deeper red layer beneath. The reeded shank sweeps up and goes around the intaglio. A good looking signet ring when worn.
