Late Georgian 18ct Gold Mourning Ring for Vice Admiral Charles Stirling

A charming 18ct gold mourning ring that was made in 1823 in London. It commemorates the life of Vice Admiral Charles Stirling. On the reverse is engraved “Vice Admiral Chas (Charles) Stirling died 7 Nov 1833 Aged 74”. The top is black enamel with an applied “Forget me not” set with small rose diamonds in silver settings. The shoulders are trifurcated with repoussee detail of stylised fern leaves meaning “Sincerity” and roses meaning “Love” and continue to a fluted shank. The repoussee decoration continues around the top.
Vice Admiral Charles Stirling was born in 1760 and died in 1833 aged 74. He served in the Royal Navy and rose to the rank of Vice Admiral. Among his commands he held were HMS Savage,HMS Pompee, HMS Glory, HMS Sampson, and HMS Diadem. He was Commissioner at the Jamaica Dockyard and the Cape of Good Hope Station. He fought in many battles including the French Revolutionary War, The Battle of Algeciras, The Napoleonic War, the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1805 and the Battle of Montevideo in 1807.
