An unusual 18ct gold Arts and Crafts ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It has been set with a star sapphire that has an approximate weight of 4.72 carats. Star sapphire is a variety of the gemstone sapphire that displays a reflected star of light on its surface. This phenomenon is called “asterism,” one of the optical effects that can make a gem “phenomenal.” The cabochon cut star sapphire in this ring is a beautiful greyish blue colour and clearly displays the star. The shank is typical of the Arts and Crafts period with raised gold work and rope edging.
