Victorian Silver Rectangular Shaped Locket with Aesthetic Period Detail

166S
606 Admirers

An interesting Victorian silver locket that was made in Birmingham in 1880. The front has been engraved with a heron with water and bullrushes with sun, fan and hatching detail. This style was called the “Aesthetic” or “Japonesqe” style which was prevalent in the 1880s. This period was inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes like birds, leaves and sometimes Japanese-style elements like bamboo. It was a result of both the Japanese trade relations that had opened during the Victorian mid-century period and a corresponding trend toward a simpler more refined sense of design. The reverse of the locket has been engraved with ivy leaves which literally means in Victorian “Cling to me”. Inside are two glazed compartments for photographs.
