Victorian 15ct Gold Ring with Carnelian Masonic Intaglio & Snake Motif Shoulders

834T

Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 15ct gold ring that was made circa 1860. The shank has lovely detail with a snake eating it’s tail on either side. This is known as an ouroboros The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a snake or serpent eating its own tail, signifying infinity and the cycle of birth and death.
In the centre is a carnelian that has been carved with an intaglio of a square and compass.
the Square and Compasses are really the most well known Freemason symbol. The meaning behind it is quite literal, with the square representing morality in that Freemasons need to ‘square their actions by the square of virtue with all mankind’.
The compass measures the ability to wisely conduct actions within certain boundaries. In other words, together the Square and Compasses remind Freemasons to explore their desires and passions without stepping outside the realms of moral behaviour.
A wonderful ring to wear.
