This is a charming 18ct75% pure gold (or 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts other metals) More gold mourningRings made especially to mark the death of a loved one. Often called 'memento mori' rings. Rare examples survive intact and are highly collectable. More ring that was made in London in 1831. It has been set with black Vauxhall glassThrough the eighteenth century and on into the middle of the nineteenth, Vauxhall glass was a popular gem substitute. Intense hues of highly reflective purple, orange, red, green and blue were set into butterfly, snowflake and flower motifs on necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches and hair combs. More split pearls. Pearls stood for Tears and the black glass was the colour for mourning. The ornate shouldersThe point on a ring where the central section meets the shank or band, often carved, decorated or inlaid with small diamond accent stones. More and fluted shankThe circle of metal that attaches to the decorative part of a ring and encircles the finger. More are typical of the Regency period. At that time it was the custom to have rings made in memory of a loved one or members of the family. It is engraved inside “Ms Sarah Young died 7 April 1832 Aged 72”.
