Free Worldwide DeliveryThe Maltese cross first appeared around the 1500s. It was known as the Cross of the Knights of St. John and was given to those individuals who had demonstrated acts of “valour and rescue”. Around the later part of the 18th century, this symbol of heroism incited a fashion craze. This is a good example of a Maltese cross that was made circa 1820. It is very detailed workmanship using three colours of gold, red, yellow and white and carved grey chalcedony for the arms. In the centre is a good pigeon blood ruby surrounded by eight fine white natural split pearls. On the reverse is a square locket section. The glass is sadly missing. It also has a lovely two colour gold original bale with leaves and a small flower.
