Georgian Large 15ct Gold Cased Watch Key set with Carnelian

866S

Written by Olly Gerrish

An ornate watch key that was made circa 1820. Watch keys at that period were an art form in themselves with subjects such as pineapples, animals, oak leaves etc worked in to the design. This large example has been set with a carnelian that can be likened to a pomegranate. This fruit symbolises prosperity, wealth and fertility. It also represented the sun to the Phoenicians and the ancient Greeks considered it a symbol of fertility, life and matrimony, the Babylonians believed that the use of pomegranate seeds before the battle made them invulnerable and the seeds were also considered to be useful when taken for birth control. So choose a meaning as to whatever takes your fancy and then start a watch key collection with this unusual key! They look great when worn on a medium length chain.
