Georgian 9ct Gold Shell Locket with Natural Pearl Surround

42Y
630 Admirers

An unusual 9ct gold Georgian shell locket that was made circa 1820. It is actually a mourning locket as it commemorates Elizabeth Longlands who on the 17th may 1830 aged 42. It hinges open to reveal a glazed compartment that contains a woven lock of her hair. This can be removed if wanted. The shell is surrounded by natural split pearls.

Shells were often featured in mourning jewels as they represented the safe journey between the physical and the spiritual world. Pearls were for tears.
