Free Worldwide DeliveryA rare and original 15ct gold Acrostic Regard brooch that was made circa 1820 when jewels such as this sent secret messages from an admirer. It is in the form of a lyre and has seven tear shaped drops that have closed back, foiled setting to enhance their brilliance under candlelight.
The first letter of each stone spells out the word Regard. (Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, Diamond)
The brooch is in the shape of a lyre (a small harp), a classical motif popular during the Georgian era (1714–1837). The lyre or harp motif was often used to symbolise heavenly themes or love linking it to Cupid and love’s “strings”. It is fine repousse work with flower motifs and has been set with a triangular shaped aquamarine and a round aquamarine.
This brooch would have been given as a private love token, a discreet yet deeply personal way to express affection, respect, and admiration in an age when open declarations of love were less common. The message was known only to the giver, the wearer, and those familiar with the “language of gemstones”.
It is lovely condition and would be a great brooch to give as a token of love.
