This is an unusual 18ct75% pure gold (or 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts other metals) More gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It has been set with five oval cabochonA polished, not faceted, dome shaped stone - either round or oval with a flat polished base, primarily used as a cut for phenomenal stones such as cat's eyes and stars.

The exact origin of opal’s name is disputed, but historians are confident that in ancient Rome opalOpals occur in a range of body colours from white, black or grey, bright orangey red and a pale watery colour. The most precious opals show strong colour contrast and generally have a dark body colour with a vivid array of colour play. More was known as “opalus” which translates as the “precious stone” It was revered as it was considered to display the colours of other gemstones all in one stone.
