Berlin iron is a black-lacquered cast iron material used in jewellery making beginning c. 1790. Originating in Silesia, Prussia at the Gleiwitz Foundry, the Royal Berlin Foundry and a manufacturer in Horovice, Bohemia all produced jewellery in this manner. In the Franco Prussian wars Germans gave their gold in return for iron pieces to contribute towards the war effort. Today they are not only rare but very collectable as often pieces have rusted away over the years.
These earrings are a good example and are well preserved. Each one features a Neo Classical dancing female on a mirrored background.
