9ct Gold Oval Engine Turned Cufflinks

114 Admirers

A smart pair of 9ct gold cufflinks that were made in Birmingham in 1922. They have engine turned decoration. Engine turning is the mechanical engraving of an intricate and repetitive pattern onto an underlying surface, often metal, using an engine turning machine. The machines were first used in the sixteenth century on soft materials such as ivory and wood, before being used on metals such as gold and silver in the eighteenth century. These cufflinks are a good example of this process which was commonly used in the 1920s.
