Alexandrite
A variety of the mineral, chrysoberyl, discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1830, and named in honour of the reigning tsar, Alexander II (1818-1881). Because of its distinct colour-change from green when viewed in daylight to red under incandescent light, it is often referred to as the ’emerald by day and ruby by night’.
