Discover MoreA very unusual sealA stone or metal plaque carved with an image (an intaglio) but with design reversed so that it is readable when impressed in wax.
More that was made in Scotland circa 1880 and features a curling stone. Outdoor curling was very popular in Scotland between the 16th and 19th centuries because the climate provided good ice conditions every winter. The game consists of two teams, each with four players, who take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones or rocks, across the ice curling sheet toward the house, a circular targetA cluster in the shape of a target or bull's eye, with concentric circles of alternating gemstones. Originally these were given as love tokens in the Edwardian era, where each gemstone provided a secret meaning. More markedA small hallmark or punchmark either on the inside or outside of the shank which indicates the metal is platinum, gold or silver. If the metal is gold, it could also indicate the carat, e.g. 18 carat gold. More on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. This seal may have been presented to the winner so it was most likely a special commission. It is 15ct62.5% pure gold (or 625 parts pure gold and 375 parts other metals). Popular during the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras but was discontinued in the mid-1930s. More gold and the base is smokey quartzQuartz is a silicon oxide with the various colours being derived from metallic oxides. Varieties include amethyst, citrine and smoky. More with a monogram “Gloria Merces Virtutis” with the letter K within a complex monogram. The latin phrase “Virtutis Gloria Merces” is translated as “Glory is the Reward of Valour.” This is the motto of the Robertson family clan so one of the family was obviously a curling champion!
