Georgian 15ct Gold Round Locket with Garter Motif

Written by Olly Gerrish

I love this style of locket as it is smart, original and very wearable. It was made circa 1820 and is typical of the late Georgian period in style with repousse work around the edge then an engine turned pattern with a garter and a plain centre. The use of the garter as an emblem may have derived from straps used to fasten armour several hundred years ago and then it became part of a heraldic coat of Arms. The reverse is the same but without the garter. Inside is a later tinted portrait of a young boy.
