Regency 15ct Gold Scallop Shell Locket

Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual scallop shell locket that was made circa 1820-1830. It is 15ct gold and a beautiful buttery yellow colour. It hinges open to reveal a glazed locket compartment that contains a plaited lock of hair. (This can be removed if wanted) The scallop shell is a very early symbol that was used to point pilgrims on their way to Santiago. It also represents the rebirth of the soul so this locket was likely a mourning piece as both meanings point to the soul on it’s journey.

A wonderful piece of antique jewellery.
