Edwardian Sapphire & Diamond Ring

729G
Written by Olly Gerrish

A very well designed and made 18ct gold, sapphire and diamond, diamond-shaped ring. The sapphires are a good Royal blue colour and well matched. The diamonds offset the sapphires. The setting is called ‘millegrain’, meaning a thousand grains in French. This was a very time consuming method of setting stones and is a sure sign of quality in jewellery. It is characterised by a series of continuous fine beads on the surface that are not only decorative, but can also help secure a gemstone in place. It was created by rolling a tiny wheel at the edge of a special tool over the metal.
