Edwardian 15ct Gold Pair of Butterflies brooch set with a Ruby, Sapphire & Natural Split Pearls

Written by Olly Gerrish

A pretty pair of 15ct gold butterfly brooches that were made circa 1910. Each one has been set with natural split pearls and small cabochon rubies for the eyes. One has an old mine cut diamond, the other a sapphire set into the body. There is a fine trace link chain that joins the two brooches.

The butterfly is a symbol of the soul, immortality, rebirth and resurrection, the ability to transform, a butterfly is born, transforming from a caterpillar. Also, the butterfly is a symbol of the Great Goddess. The image of the Great Goddess goes back to the ancient times of human history, to the Paleolithic. This supreme deity personified heaven and earth at the same time, life and death. So the wearing of these butterflies carry wonderful meanings.

They can be worn on a lapel and look very decorative.
