Rare Find
A most unusual early Victorian brooch that was made circa 1840-1860. It is 15ct gold or above and is composed of a bow that has been studded with graduated turquoise. Suspended from it is a weeping heart that has also been pave set with graduated turquoise. It opens to reveal a vinaigrette with a pierced grill that hinges open so that scented cloth could be placed inside. It also can be unattached from the bow as it is a padlock that hinges open, so it can be worn on its own if wanted.
This brooch would have been worn when out and about and used to fend off the unpleasant smells.
