Rare Find
An unusual gold and silver brooch that was made circa 1860-1880. It is composed of a nightingale sitting on a lily of the valley stem. The lily of the valley is the birth flower for May, and it is often paired with the nightingale, which is also a bird associated with May. In a broader sense, the phrase “lily of the field and the bird of the air” comes from the Sermon on the Mount in the Bible.
This nightingale has been set in silver with rose diamonds, rubies and emeralds. The lily of the valley has been set in silver with four old mine cut diamonds. It is gold on the reverse. It has been beautifully made and the brooch fitting unscrews so it may have been worn on a tiara using a different fitting.
A wonderful gift for a May baby perhaps.
