French 19th Century 18ct Gold Brooch en Tremblant of Two Flies set with Natural Pearls, Emeralds, Rubies & Diamonds

This is an extraordinary 18ct gold brooch that was made circa 1880 in France.  It has been beautifully designed and features two flies that are on a spring so they tremble when worn. They have each been set with old mine cut diamonds, and one with a ruby, the other with an emerald. There are three natural pearls and further old mine cut diamonds at each end. Flies had symbolic significance in the 19th century.  They were often used as representations of human mortality and by extension, spiritual humility.  More interestingly flies were used to symbolise secrets so what a wonderful brooch to wear.
