Georgian 9ct Gold & Foiled Almandine Garnet Cruciform Pendant

A216
14 Admirers
Written by Olly Gerrish

A lovely 9ct gold cruciform pendant that was made circa 1820. It has been pinch collet set with flat cut almandine garnets that are foiled to the reverse to give the garnets luminosity.

The cruciform motif was a highly symbolic piece of antique jewellery (c. 1714–1837) that combined deep Christian faith with the protective and romantic folklore historically attached to garnets. Garnets symbolise blood, vitality, passion, and loyalty. In early folklore, soldiers and travellers wore garnets as protective talismans to ensure safe passage and ward off evil spirits. In the church, the red stone was historically used to represent Christ’s sacrifice.
