Early 20th Century Platinum Cluster Ring set with an Alexandrite & Diamonds

Written by Olly Gerrish

A rare platinum ring, made circa 1910 and claw set with a natural alexandrite weighing approximately 1.80 carats.  Alexandrite is the very rare colour-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it’s now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil, but fine material is exceptionally rare and valuable. Alexandrite displays a change of colour from green to red. A distinct colour change is the primary qualification for a chrysoberyl to be considered alexandrite. In the evening under incandescent light the stone is strongly tilted to the red end, thus causing alexandrite to appear reddish. Daylight, is more equally balanced, since our eyes are most sensitive to green light, the balance is tipped to the green side.

The alexandrite in this ring is fantastic and is surrounded by well matched white diamonds.

This ring is accompanied with a gemmological certificate that states that the alexandrite is natural and from Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
