Early 19th Century French 18ct Gold Poissarde Earrings set with Amethyst Paste

A good pair of 18ct gold earrings that were made circa 1820. The “poissarde” hoop earring originated in France.  The market women of Paris had a special relationship to the king since the Middle Ages when Saint Louis granted destitute women the exclusive privilege to sell retail goods and especially fish at designated sites in city markets. A market woman was known as a poissarde.  This name was applied to the earrings such as the ones we see here due to the fish hook detail to when opened.  They have ornate gold repousse  motifs and each one has been set with an amethyst paste.  They enter the ear through the back which is a little tricky to get used to but once you have mastered the technique it is fine!

They look fantastic when worn and are not heavy.
