19th Century 18ct Gold Micro Mosaic Drop Earrings with Dove & Scarab Motifs

Written by Olly Gerrish

A fabulous pair of 18ct gold earrings that were made circa 1860 in Rome. During the 18th and 19th centuries, micro mosaics were the ultimate luxury souvenirs for wealthy European travellers visiting Rome on the Grand Tour. Common motifs included famous Roman landmarks like the Colosseum, classical ruins, and “The Doves of Pliny”.  Leading artists included Giacomo Raffaelli, credited with making the first micro mosaic jewellery in 1775, and the Castellani family, who pioneered an “archaeological style”

Traditionally the mosaics are created from “smalti filati” (spun glass) or stone, often held in place by a slow-drying cement. Unlike standard mosaics, the tesserae in micro mosaics are often oblong rather than square to allow for more painterly transitions and shading.

These articulated earrings feature the doves of peace and scarabs
