19th Century 18ct Gold Zodiac & 1811 Comet Ring set with Rose Diamonds

232R
60 Admirers Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

An extraordinary 18ct gold zodiac ring that after some research I concluded was made in West Africa in the early 19th century. The ring is made up of a flat-section hoop with scrolling bands to the edges, and a median band of twelve zodiacal signs. The unusual thing is the rose diamond set comet that dates this ring to 1811 when there were sightings across the world. It was known as “Napoleon’s Comet” because of the Napoleonic Wars and the impending War of 1812. It was visible to the naked eye for around 260 days, the longest recorded period of visibility until the appearance of Comet Hale–Bopp in 1997.

This ring cannot be sized.
