They date to the 1820s when there was a fascination with shells and shell collecting to place in curiosity cabinets or to create grottos. Shells also found their way in to pieces of jewellery as in these earrings that have specially chosen cowrie shells. Each shell has a gold flower above and below to secure it with a ball fitting above and delicate wires.
