What is an antique engagement ring?

An 'antique' engagement ring is a ring that is at least 100 years old — so anything made around 1920 or before. Our Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau engagement rings are all antique.

What is a vintage engagement ring?

A 'vintage' engagement ring was made between 50 and 100 years ago — broadly 1920 to 1970. Our Art Deco, Retro and Mid-Century engagement rings fall under the vintage banner.

Are all of your engagement rings original?

Yes. We only sell 100% original, one-of-a-kind engagement rings, handmade by master craftsmen up to 200 years ago. We do not sell modern reproductions or mass-produced rings made in an 'antique style'. Every ring is the real thing, with its own story to tell.

What condition are your engagement rings in?

Generally very good, especially given their age — we select only the finest examples. In the rare case a ring shows notable wear or damage, we say so in its description. You are always welcome to ask for more images or video, or see a ring in person at our London showroom.

Are your engagement rings conflict-free?

Yes. Our antique engagement rings predate modern diamond mining, so they are inherently conflict-free — buying one adds no new demand for mining and contributes nothing to the problems that come with it. Read our ethical policy →

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

The old "one to three months' salary" rule is unromantic and, for many people, unrealistic — and it is not something we believe in. Decide on a budget you are comfortable with and find a ring you both love within it.

What are your most popular engagement ring styles and stones?

The classics: cluster, solitaire, three stone, five stone, marquise and crossover rings. Diamonds, sapphires and rubies remain the most sought-after stones for their beauty and durability, with emeralds and semi-precious stones such as aquamarine increasingly popular. Don't be afraid to use your imagination. Old-cut diamonds have a softer, warmer sparkle than modern brilliants; they were cut to glow by candlelight.

What are your most popular engagement ring eras?

Victorian (1839–1901), Edwardian (1901–1914) and Art Deco (1920–1935) — a golden age for jewellery, when style and technical innovation converged. Rings from these eras are increasingly hard to find in good condition, which is why they hold their value so well. Each has its own character: Victorian rings are romantic and richly coloured, Edwardian rings are delicate platinum lacework, and Art Deco rings are all clean lines and bold geometry.

Can antique engagement rings be re-sized, and how do I find the right size?

Almost all of them, yes — and your first sizing is free, carried out by one of the best jewellers in the trade. The small minority of rings that cannot be sized (intricately carved shanks, stones running the whole way round) are clearly marked on their product page.

If you don't know your partner's size, print our ring measurer and check one of their existing rings against it. If that's not possible without giving the game away, propose first and use your free sizing afterwards — send the ring back to us and we'll size it and return it within a few working days.
