Victorian Silver & Gold Man in the Moon Brooch set with a Moonstone & Diamonds

An unusual brooch that was made circa 1880. In the centre is a rub over set carved moonstone of the man in the moon. Around him are nine radiating petals claw set in silver with graduated old mine cut diamonds that have an approximate weight of 2.5 carats. There are also small rose diamonds around his face. The late 19th century was a period when there was great interest in the lunar cycle. It was surrounded by mysticism and gave rise to jewels that featured the man in the moon.
