Find Out MoreThis is a very fine micro mosaicAn object decorated with many small adjacent pieces of inlaid glass or stone arranged to form a design. More brooch. It was made circa 1850 in 18ct75% pure gold (or 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts other metals) More gold. The micro mosaic is set into a blue glass surround. The origins of micro mosaics date back to Roman times. The technique is quite complicated. Micro mosaics were made of heated glass that was pulled into small strands and cut into tiny pieces called tesserae. Metal oxides were then added to the glass to achieve colour. The tesserae were then placed and glued to form an image. This was in turn enclosed by a surround of stone or glass and then placed in a frame. This brooch is from the mid 19th century (circa 1860) when micro mosaics were sold to visitors on “The Grand Tour” in Italy. The mount is a wavy ribbon pattern. Micro mosaic is becoming very hard to find especially in good condition.
