Book Your AppointmentThis is a beautifully made 18ct75% pure gold (or 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts other metals) More gold brooch by Alfred Phillips who was the son of Robert Phillips. It is composed of two sage green and white enamelled dolphins. Their eyes have been enamelled in red. They have wonderful smiling expressions and are playing with three balls which are set with green garnets and diamonds. It was made circa 1880 by Alfred Phillips. His father Robert Phillips was born on May 20, 1810. He along with his brother, William Benjamin, founded Phillips Brothers in London. Initially located at 31 Cockspur from 1846 to 1855, it was moved down the street to number 23. Sometime around 1860, he sponsored Carlo Giuliano as a member of his firm. In 1869 Phillip’s son, Alfred joined the firm and the name became Phillips brothers & Son. Phillips was one of the first English Jewellers to make archaeological jewellery in the Italian style. He exhibited at the 1862 International Exposition in London and at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris where he was the only English Jeweller to be awarded a Gold Medal. In 1870, Phillips was given a decoration by the King of Italy for his service to the coralAn organic gem, calcium carbonate with a trace of carotene, deposited by tiny sea creatures living in the depths of warm seas in huge colonies. It grows in branches that look like underwater trees. Coral is believed to be one of the oldest forms of gemstone jewellery, with some pieces dating back as far as 23,000 BC. More trade. When Robert Phillips died in 1881, an associate, William Sturgess ran the firm until Alfred assumed control in 1884. Phillips Brothers & Son closed their doors in 1902.. It has an added safety chainA small chain applied to a piece of jewellery with the purpose of adding additional security to prevent loss. On bracelets and necklaces a safety chain will often join the clasp ends should the clasp fail. On a brooch it is often attached to a small pin which is to be used in tandem with the main brooch pin.
