Oval Silver Pendant With Engraving of Kermesse Flamande (Flemish Feast) after Teniers

558L
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual silver pendant engraved with a Flemish feast after David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) Teniers is one of the most popular artists from the Flemish school of the 17th century. He was a painter of landscapes, genre scenes and still lifes. He had already reached the peak of his craft when, in 1651, Archduke Guillaume named him as painter for the Brussels Court. The Prince’s patronage earned Teniers great success. Numerous commissions came from foreign sovereigns, in particular Philip IV of Spain. This is a faithfully reproduced and highly skilled engraving of part of a painting called “Kermesse Flamande” (The Flemish feast) A kermesse is a rustic festival peculiar to Belgium and northern France.
