Neoclassical 15ct Gold Drop Cameo Earrings

A wonderful pair of 15ct gold drop earrings with butterflies on the top and ladies’ heads in profile carved in shell. Psyche was depicted in ancient mosaics as a butterfly winged goddess in the company of her husband Eros. Sometimes a pair of Pyschai are portrayed, the second perhaps being their daughter Hedone (Pleasure). They were made circa 1830 when there was a fashion for Classical jewellery spurned on by the Grand Tourists journeying to old Roman and Greek sites.
