Edwardian Aquamarine, Diamond & Ruby Heart Shaped Pendant

907S
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

A beautiful pendant that was made circa 1910. In the centre is a heart shaped aquamarine. It is a lovely sea blue colour. Aquamarines can range from a very light hue to much deeper, vibrant shades of blue. The term aquamarine is derived from a combination of two Latin words. The first one, aqua, means water and the second, marina means sea. Together, the word translates to the colour of the sea. In ancient times, aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids. Sailors used the stone as a talisman to bring good luck on the open waters. The gem was used as a symbol of protection and fearlessness too.
Around the aquamarine are twelve small square cut rubies in gold settings. Then two rows of scalloped and millgrained settings set with a mixture of small old mine cut diamonds and rose cut diamonds. The bale has also been set with rose diamonds and there is a natural pearl at the base. The front is silver and gold and the reverse is gold. It is such a pretty pendant and ideal for a Valentines gift.
