Written by Olly Gerrish

During the Victorian and Edwardian period, a sophisticated means of coin storage was invented, the sovereign case. These were small, portable boxes fashioned into a cylindrical shape. Inside the sovereigns could be placed in sprung fittings. Today these lovely items are worn as a decorative pendant. This example is 9ct gold and was made in Birmingham in 1905. it has been engraved on both sides with a scroll pattern and has a plain shield shaped field engraved with the initial “J”.
