Edwardian 9ct Gold & Sardonyx Cameo Ring of a Georgian Gentleman

Written by Olly Gerrish

A great looking 9ct gold ring that was made in Chester in 1910. It contains a stunning hard stone cameo that has been beautifully carved with a portrait of a Georgian gentleman carved circa 1800-1810. The material is sardonyx, or banded onyx, which has been cut through the white band on to the black to create contrast. We can attribute the portrait carving to be by Giovanni Antonio Santarelli (1758-1826) who was a gem engraver and wax modeller. He was born in Abruzzi, near Florence. The shank is trifurcated that gives the ring a lighter overall look.
