18th Century 18ct Gold Posy Ring Engraved God for Me Appointed Thee

158Y
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

Posy rings as they are known were given as wedding bands and often had wonderful quaint engraved sentiments inside the band. This example has “God for Me Appointed Thee”. Posy rings derive their name from the French word “posy” or “poesy”, a derivative of poetry meaning short rhyme. They were popular during the 15th through the 17th centuries in both England and France as lovers’ gifts, used to communicate secret messages of love between the giver and the recipient. This D-shaped ring is very comfortable to wear and dates circa 1650-1750.

An original ring in good condition that is as appropriate to wear now as it was in the early 1700’s.
