Book Your Virtual ConsultationAn amazing heavy gauge 18ct gold cross that was made circa 1860. It is entirely formed of intricate hand applied canetille work. Cannetille is similar to filigree work and was popular from the 1820s onwards. Motifs used were scrolls, beehives, bobbles and coils. The experts in this field were the Castellani brothers who worked in Rome in the 1860s and perfected the ancient granulation technique that had been lost for centuries. They realised that the Etruscans had created their designs by adding detail to the metal rather than carving, punching, and cutting into it. There is a domed glazed locket on the reverse.
This large 18ct gold cross is an excellent example of the rediscovered technique and is in amazing condition.
