An unusual and large 18ct gold brooch set with a shell cameo of an artist and his muse. It was made circa 1860 and is in very good condition. The model is gazing at the artist’s canvas and he is quite obviously seeking her approval. I love the little details in this cameo like the side table with the lion supporter and the flower vase above. There is also a snake (ourobos) eating its own tail around the edge. This represents the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth.
