Tourists would visit the area and often purchase either beads or intricate carved coral pieces. Coral was traditionally given either to celebrate the birth of a daughter or as a wedding present. In Roman times it was used as a talisman to protect children. When given to celebrate a marriage the symbolic meaning is for success and longevity. It has a gold clasp.
