Victorian 9ct Gold Articulated Figure of Punch

Punch originated in the 16th-century in Italy as the puppet character Pulcinella and was introduced to England in 1662 by an Italian puppeteer. The diarist Samuel Pepys recorded his puppet show in may of that year. The show gained popularity in England during the 17th century, evolving from string puppets to the hand puppets used today. Initially featuring an adult-oriented, sometimes satirical storyline, it later became more of a children’s show, especially with the rise of seaside resorts in the Victorian era.

Trinkets were sold and this particular one is 9ct gold and has fine engraving on his body. When you pull the chain between his legs his arms and legs raise up.

It was made circa 1860-1880.
