Free UAE ShippingAn impressive gold and silver Arts and Crafts ring that has been rub over set with a large 3.5 carat sugar loaf mossy emerald. On each side is an owl in silver. It has been hand applied with gold rope work, leaves, grapes and even two little hearts. There is also a heart shaped area on the reverse that has traces of engraved words. This ring was made circa 1910. The ring is unsigned but was made by William Thomas Blackband who was educated at the Victoria Street school of jewellery in Birmingham. He then returned to teach there and retired in 1946. He worked closely with Arthur Gaskin who taught at the Birmingham school of art and was a member of the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft. There is a similar ring by Blackband in the Birmingham museum.
The Roman goddess Minerva along with her Greek counterpart Athena were the goddesses of wisdom.
So the owls with it’s ability to see in the dark, are strong symbols of the wisdom, knowledge, insight, and learning!
