A lovely 18ct gold ring that has been made in the Art Nouveau style that was popular in the early 1900s. The sweeping leaf design shoulders virtually enclose the three gems. It has been claw set with a green garnet. The proper name for this stone is a demantoid garnet. Although garnets have been known since ancient times, the demantoid variety was not discovered until 1868 in Russia\u2019s western central Ural Mountains. Miners were immediately stunned by the highly refractive nature of the gem material. They began comparing it to diamond and referred to it as \u201cdemantoid\u201d, from the French \u201cdemant\u201d meaning diamond. The reason is obvious, with its high brilliance and dispersion. These bright apple green stones are comparatively rare and very expensive and were popular during the Edwardian period. On either side is a claw set transition cut diamond.
