Peridot is named after the French word \u201cperitot\u201d, meaning gold, because the mineral can vary towards this colour. It is also the <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-373192\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><span class=\"glossary-underline\">birthstone<\/span><\/span><\/span> for the month of August and is the stone given to celebrate the 16th year of marriage.
