This was developed in the late 19th century. It is from the French word \u201cmille\u201d for a thousand, and from \u201cgrain\u201d as the same meaning in English. It refers to what appears to be hundreds of tiny beads upon a metal edge. Platinum is a hard metal so this process was particularly suited to it.
