An unusual 18ct gold ring that was made in the 1950s. It has been set with a good natural cabochon cut star ruby. Star rubies are the rarest rubies and are among the most valuable types of coloured gemstones available in the world. When illuminated they show an optical effect called “asterism”, in this case six neat rays of light that move across the surface of the stone. Another lovely feature of this ruby is the near-perfect hexagonal colour zoning visible at its centre. Burma (Myanmar) was the world’s main source for rubies so this ruby likely came from Burma. Around it are well matched diamonds with a further three diamonds set in to each shoulder.
