An unusual 18ct gold & platinum circular brooch set with rose diamonds and synthetic rubies in the form of a cross. In the 1920s there were many pieces of jewellery that were made using synthetic stones as the process had just been invented. However the history of the synthetic ruby is much earlier. In 1801, Robert Hare invented the oxyhydrogen gas blowpipe and the thought of producing synthetic rubies and sapphires were in the beginning phase of thought. In 1817, Guy-Lassac realized that heating ammonium alum would produce aluminium oxide and the actual process of synthesising corundum started.

In 1837, experiments began to synthesise corundum with Gauding and Fremy. They had no success and Fremy gave up in 1870.

In 1873, Auguste Verneuil working in Paris at the Museum of Natural History, began to synthesise corundum.

In 1876, after many experiments, ruby synthesis was understood and repeatable.

In 1886 Verneuil realised that fusing powdered alumina and chromium with the oxygen hydrogen torch made synthetic corundum.

He then discovered flame fusion and later he realised that using different elements would create other synthetic gemstones.

In 1902, Vernueil came to realise that fusing powdered alumina and chromium with the oxygen hydrogen torch at 2000 degrees Celsius made small particles of synthetic ruby. That same year he announced that he was capable of creating synthetic ruby in a large enough size to use in jewellery.

So, in summary, this brooch is a good example of synthetic rubies invented by Vernueil!
