A lovely late Georgian 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1820 but has been engraved at a later date on the reverse ‘Ann Mercer Obt (died) Augt 3rd 1867 Aet (aged) 71″. I researched where she was from and there was a reference to the family of Richard Mercer in Chipping, Lancashire. On the top is a ring of natural split pearls within gold petals that enclose a rectangular cut garnet. The shoulders are the typical Georgian repoussee design of roses and have been set with further natural split pearls. Pearls were always used in mourning jewellery as they represent tears.
